After a slow start, bundled payments are becoming popular fast.
Paying for efficiently achieving optimal patient outcomes is gratifying for providers because it means being paid for fulfilling your professional drive. It is attractive to patients, health plans and governments because it creates transparency, reintroduces healthy competition between providers and incentivizes streamlined, cost-efficient care.
The technology and know-how required to implement bundled payments have matured. For many types of care, bundled payments may well become the disruptive "new normal" of paying for healthcare in the United States.
